This study exams and makes an analysis of teaching of listening at senior high schools in China. Its aim is to find aspects and factors involved in teaching that may significantly affect the results of teaching. Starting with theories and concepts of listening, the study looks at listening-related factors and suggests way to improve teaching of listening in terms of lesson design based on the theories: top-down process and bottom-up process. Listening teaching now at high school is not very efficient and somewhat boring, so the paper does some research about improving listening teaching. Since it is very practical, the main research method is to compare the atmosphere in the listening class as well as students' participation in the class. Using this method, combining listening activity with other learning activities, we can make the class more interesting and the students more active in participating the listening class.The thesis consists of 5 parts.The first part provides a brief introduction to listening, importance of listening, weakness of present methods of listening teaching at high school, literature review.The second is about fundamental requirements of listening: the main process, different roles of teachers and students in each stage, the factors affecting listening teaching,.The third part is about listening training for students of senior high school. In this part, we will read about the barriers students meet in listening, improving listening teaching,The fourth part is about design of listening lessons. In this part, we will read about how to choose materials, how to design a listening class.The fifth part is conclusion, which summarizes the previous chapters and states the remaining questions for further research.
