The key objective in junior middle school is to improve students' reading ability in Chinese. As has been advocated by the new course standards, reading on their own and the training of reading ability can help students lay a better foundation for their future study and development.Reading on one's own is also called initiative reading. It is a complex psychological process. In the reading, the acceptance of the written message and the understanding of the meaning for the written language, its content and its ideological emotion is accomplished through one's eyesight. And it is the reading of high quality.The investigation shows the great change in the teaching of reading brought about by the new course reformation.. That is, the students are more willing to do the reading, teachers and students cooperate better, out-of-class reading is enlarged and the reading quantity is growing. On the other hand, such problems as passive reading, reading in disorder and low quality, lack of better reading environments and limited time as well as the poor guidance of the teacher are also existed.How to guide the students to do the initiative reading and train students' reading ability all-sidedly and systematically, according to the new course standards, we'd better follow the next six points.Firstly, the guidance of orientation. We must put the students at the first place, build up their viewpoint of self education, establish the students' key position in initiative reading, respect their personality and help them achieve success and find happiness so far as initiative reading is concerned.Secondly, the guidance of order. We must guide the students to do the reading in every stage scientifically. Macrocosmically speaking, we should arrange the teaching objective of reading in three years of junior middle school scientifically and systematically, and guide the students to do the training in every stage. Microcosmically speaking, we also ought to arrange the classroom reading process in a scientific way in order to guide them to do the reading better.Thirdly, the guidance of interest. We have many good approaches to stimulate students' reading interest. That is, cr eating good environments, lowering the psychological pressure, designing the introductory remarks, finding the beauty of the reading materials, using the audio-visual means, teaching by personal example as well as verbal instruction and top students show their better reading skills, etc.Fourthly, the guidance of method. We can guide the students to do the reading in a scientific way, such as reading aloud, reading silently, circling the key points, annotating, extracting, note-taking, intensive reading, brief and quick reading. The students' reading ability is thus better-trained.Fifthly, the guidance of deep thoughts. We can foster students' adaptive and creative abilities through imagination, mimic writing, after-thought writing and comparison reading.Sixthly, the guidance of extension. We should lay emphasis on the guidance of out-of-class reading, let the students be clear about the reading purpose, help them choosematerials, let them form a good habit of reading on their own initiative, and take some measures of supervision and self-checking.Reading on their own initiative may arouse students' more interest, improve their reading ability and quality as well as the teachers' teaching quality. Furthermore, we have to go on with some deep probes and come to the perfection gradually. And what should be conducted for further studies are such problems as reading methods, choice of reading materials and activities around the reading.
