Self-handicapping is a protective attribution strategies, self-handicapper catch his intention by creating a condition handicapping the present task on purpose. When self- handicapper cann't do well, the creation of condition handicapping success make him escape ability attuibution. Thus he avoid or reduce negative effect of bad performation. Self-handicapping contains two forms: one is self-reported handicaps, the other is behavioral self-handicaps. Based on the previous litreratures , the writer make a deep research on those ambiguous aspect.The article studys on the predictor of self-handicapping, the motivetion nature of self-handicapping, gender difference and the cost of self-handicapping by the scale and expriment, and finds:(1) fearing of negative evalution, intellectual achivement responsibility, self-esteem, self-reinforcement are prominent predictior of self-handicapping, and the contribution of intellectual achivement responsibility is the biggest. Self-handicapping is negative correlation with acedemic achivement ,but it isn't prominent.(2) From the article, the motivetion of self-handicapping isn't self-protection but self-enhancement.(3) the research prove the gender difference of self-handicapping, that is , the male have the more self-handicapping than the female.(4) Learning disabilities students have a prominent difference with excellent students. That is, learning disabilities students have the more self-handicapping, the less self-esteem and self-efficacy.(5) Although self-handicapping achieve the intention of proteceing or enhanceing self-worth, the benefit is at cost of interpersonal relation.
