Self-handicapping is such a strategy as deliberately reducing effort or exaggerating the difficulty to success before the performance by which the self-handicapper can protect his self-worth or maintain a good image in the eyes of others. In competitive surroundings, the motivation of study mostly comes from efforts which in order to improve and protect some self-notion about ability. Some college students often adopt strategies to avoid success in advance in order to keep from being seen as lack of ability. For example, the students either stayed up late, on a date, or fell ill before the test, and otherwise reduced the practice time. These strategies will be their excuse for failure rather than lack of ability if their subsequent performance is poor.The research on self-handicapping has achieved great success in foreign countries, however, there are few research in this field in domestic. So this research aims to get to know the situation of self-handicapping in college physical education, to validate whether the conclusion on self-handicapping research in foreign country can be accepted in our country. At the same time, this research use self-efficacy and self-esteem variables simultaneously to predict self-handicapping, so it can draw a delicate conclusion and compare the role of each variable to self-handicapping. Moreover, it can reveal the dynamic mechanism lurking in self-handicapping.The 46 subjects are second year university students of Qufu Normal University. we adopt the Self-efficacy Questionnaire, the Self-esteem Scale and the Claimed self-handicapping Scale to explore the relationships between self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-handicapping in sports test. The following results indicate that no sex differences between college students in the use of claimed self-handicapping, but there are significant differences in the use of behavioral self-handicapping. Only the male shows to use behavioral self-handicapping. College students' self-efficacy has direct effect on claimed self-handicapping and behavioral self-handicapping.
