The phenomena of population suburbanization has been a triumphal tendency in West countries cities after World War II .In China, some mega-cities such as Beijing and Shanghai also have some characteristics of suburbanization after 1980. Research on population distribution and suburbanization is a main topic in urban geography in China in recent years, studying population distribution and suburbanization using population distribution model is also a dominate method in both abroad and domestic literature .The author first gives a summary of literature and analyzes theories on population distribution and suburbanization, then does a empirical study of population distribution and suburbanization Shanghai based on the 4 and 5th population census data, at last compares with the study of Beijing. The paper consist of five chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction; Chapter 2 is the analysis of theories of city population distribution and suburbanization ;Chapter 3 and 4 are main body of the paper , studies the population distribution and suburbanization of city of Shanghai during 1990-2000 empirically and then compares with the study of Beijing ;Chapter 5 is the conclusion of the paper .Main conclusions of the paper are the followings:(l) The population distribution change pattern of Shanghai in 1990s is great decrease in core area of central districts, great increase in outlying area of central districts and near suburb area, tiny increase in the distant suburb area. (2) The monocentric urban model of Clark provides a good description of the population distribution of central districts and Smeed model for suburb. (3) The polycentric urban model indicates that a three-center urban spatial structure appeared in 1990 and a seven-center one developed in 2000. (4) Beijing has the same population distribution change pattern as Shanghai inl990s,both Shanghai and Beijing have the same population model in the same time.
