The process of population's development shows the spatial formation of population distributing which interacts with the productivity expanding level and the feature of regional structure. The population distributing in metropolitan areas changes a lot along with the social economic development. International experiences indicate that population suburbanization is the only way out during the expanding of big cities. Population suburbaniztion will be a new tendency for city expansion in china. Cities have expanded rapidly ever since the implementation of the policies of reform and opening to the outside world. The central area of Shanghai, the biggest city in china, has been enlarged with the result of sharp declining of the population density. Population suurbanization's become an obvious phenomenon with the continuous output of population from the urban core and the input of population from the fringe of the city and the outskirts. As expected, population suburbanization in Shanghai will last for quite a long period and will be intensified as well. Fractal theory was used in the research of urban geography the moment it was brought forward. With fractal theory, scholars at home and abroad have made a great deal of research, involving all aspects of urban development and urban system, such as form, structure, growth, traffic and evolution of a city as well as the city-size hierarchy and Pareto distribution of the urban system.Based on the special area of the metroplis, this thesis begins with the analysis of population suburbanization, and seeks to establish the research of "population distributing in metropolises on a new stage of city development. Adopting analysis of statistics and GIS, as well as other research methods of human geography, this study attempts to explore a general rule of the population suburbanization in Shanghai by observing time sequences from analyzing different stages of population distribution in Shanghai. It also discussed the interaction between social-economic development and population suburbanization. Analysis on the dynamic mechanism causing population suburbanization in Shanghai is also carried out. Applying fractal theory, this paper also treasures and calculates the fractal dimensions (box fractal dimension and correlation fractal dimension) of population distribution in Shanghai and some of its districts and counties at the levels of township, town and residential district. The fractal characteristics and the temporal and spatial dynamic evolution of population distribution are discussed in detail, and the economic and social driving forces for population evolution are analyzed.
