There are many "backward students" in junior middle schools in the rural areas of China. Many experts have discussed how the "backward students" become backward from different aspects. And many rural English teachers argue that the main reason lies in the fact that these students have a bad attitude to English study. But how much can the attitude affect backward students' English study? People seldom have had a careful and thorough investigation. This paper attempts to make a full study of the attitude theory, and discusses the uniqueness of "backward students" in the rural areas of China. It aims at helping English teachers teach their "backward students" to change their bad attitude to English study and form a good one to improve their English. The paper falls into seven parts. In the preface, the author emphasizes the importance of the attitude to study and points out that the systematic and effective education of attitude is in great need. In Chapter 1, it gives a historical review of the attitude to study; in Chapter 2, it analyses the structure of attitude and how the junior middle school students form their attitude to English study; in Chapter 3, it touches on which factors can affect their attitude to English study; in Chapter 4, after making an analysis of the survey among the "backward students" in a rural area, the author contrasts the scores of their mid-term English examination with the result of their attitude survey, then finds out the relevance of the attitude to English study and their English; in Chapter 5, it discusses how to improve their attitude from three aspects: English teachers, parents and the society. And the author tries to prove that the systematic education of the attitude to study does have effects on the improvement of backward students' English by comparing the scores of their investigation and final examination.
