The relationship between language and thinking is interdependent and interactive. On the one hand, language affects thinking. Language plays an important role in perceiving the world and forming pattern of thought. Language is the tool of human thinking. That is, only by language can a person think. Besides, human language is a vocal and symbolic system in which the vocabulary is used as building materials and grammatical structure is applied as forming rules. Especially, the grammar shows the logic rules of human thinking. So, different languages have different grammars, and this difference leads to the difference in thought patterns of different language speakers. Chinese and English are two different languages. Therefore, the Chinese speakers and English speakers have different thought patterns. On the other hand, language is affected by thinking. Thinking creates language, but language helps thinking and fixes thought patterns. And the result of thinking is written down and exchanged in language. In short, language is the main form of thinking. So it is necessary to know the thought patterns of the language speakers for a language learner.For a foreign language learner, reading is the most important way of language input. So it is the key to cultivate students English pattern of thought in teaching of reading. In this thesis, from this viewpoint, the new ways and measures are put forward to cultivate students English pattern of thought in teaching of reading and improve students reading abilities.The thesis approves of an English pattern of thought-oriented teaching of reading. First, on the basis of questionnaires, the thesis analyzes the necessity of cultivating students English patterns of thought. Next to that comes the most important part of the thesis -a contrastive analysis of Chinese and English patterns of thought and their influences on texts. It shows the importance of teaching students English pattern of thought in reading class. And then the thesis elaborates the relationship between reading and thinking, pointing out the feasibility of cultivating students English pattern of thought in teaching of reading. In the end,...
