Reading ability is a very important skill for English learning. Although primary English stress on spoken English and interest raise, the topic of English reading at the primary stage becomes an increasing concern. There is a clear requirement on Primary English Reading by New Curriculum, stating that students should read the simple story and the short written text, according to the meaning word groups. But the reality of the English teaching on reading has highlighted many problems and difficulties. The English teachers in primary school generally feel confused and ignore on reading instructions. Teaching reading tends tobe a mode of memorizing words and failing to understand the passage. Teachers and students face problems of lack of resources, lack of extra-curricular reading guide and lack of reading interest and excitation. So the development of English in primary schools is at the bottle neck stage.Based on the analyses of the present status, and problems of the current stage of the fifth and sixth graders'English reading in primary school, the writer conducted research on how to improve English reading ability of students. The thesis is divided into four parts:The first part provides the background of the topic in discussion. As well analyzes the research significance on primary school English reading skills training, based on the status and background of English reading. The second part makes the literature review on reading and teaching reading. The third part deals with the research process where the writer discusses the status of English teaching and the existing problems in Wenzhou Experimental Primary School, by questionnaire survey and individual interviews. The writer classified, summarized and analyzed the data to have a more comprehensive understanding of the views, and put forward her own ideas on English reading in primary school. The writer adopts the "problem solving" type of action research methods to explore the reading materials and develop the text reading ability of students. A series of discussions, research and practice were carried out. Combined with the background, the investigation and the analysis of the research process, the writer presents ideas and practice on how to improve students'English reading ability in Part four. Part four also includes a conclusion on Three-in-One Reading strategies. The reading goals for different grades in primary English reading are refined and classified. The suitable reading materials for children were developed. The writer collected the cases of English reading, explored effective and vivid reading teaching methods and built up the teaching mode of reading. The writer explored the English reading assessment and carried out the extra-curricular reading programs to enhance children's interest in reading. The writer's main concern is about the reading process of students, and improving students reading efficiency, to make students enable to read, enhance students reading abilities and love reading.
