English teaching has achieved a lot during the process of competence oriented education reform. However, many problems still remain to be resolved. The principal issue is that the creativity of the students hasn't been brought into full play. The demerits of the traditional teaching are still working. During recent years, the educators combined theory with practice in modern education. They have gained some fundamental effect while using cooperative learning. Cooperative learning plays a key role in training the initiation, independence, and creativity of the students. Compared with the traditional class system, cooperative learning has an outstanding advantage in promoting the communications among the students, developing their social emotions and improving teaching quality in a broad sense. During the process of the development of the cooperative learning, there occurs a trend that it will melt with other relative teaching theories. Through the further study of cooperative learning theory and constructivism theory, we find that these two theories are complementary to each other. Constructivism emphasizes that the students cannot gain knowledge simply from the teachers or other people but by making a construction of knowledge based on what they have owned. Constructivism also stresses on the influences made by the interactions among the students. It believes that learning is a process of constructing meaning, which is realised by the cooperative activities of people under certain circumstances. To apply the thought of constructivism to teaching is obviously difficult for the traditional class teaching. However, the cooperative learning, the special form of class teaching, supplies the environments with the constructive learning, especially supplies the opportunity to realise the interactions, co-operations and conversations among the students.
