To enhance students' cultural attainment through reading has already become a general consensus of worldwide education nowadays. Since time and space is limited for intra-curricular reading, after-school reading has become an important way to enlarge students' ken, to enhance their spirit, and to cultivate their cultural attainment. However, in what status is the after-school reading of middle school students, especially those in middle or small cities where cultural establishments are less likely to be all ready? How about their reading conditions, inclines of interests and attitudes to reading? What helps will they need when reading? Each educator has to cope with these questions before he/she gives reading directions to students. The tenet of this dissertation, therefore, is to do some fundamental work for after-school reading of middle school students. Researches have been carried out among three middle schools in Lengshuijiang, Hunan. Statistics have been analyzed about the status and the reasons for its existence. Countermeasures have been put forward to treat existing problems.The dissertation can be divided into three parts.Firstly, sum up the after-school reading status of middle school students through researches. There are five aspects: a) after-school reading attitude of middle school students; b) after-school reading conditions of middle school students; c) after-school reading inclines of middle school students; d) directions from teachers and parents to after-school reading of middle school students; e) strategies and methods of students' reading.Secondly, conclusions have been drawn after analyzing that after-school reading of middle school students is mostly in an out-of-order and inefficient status. The disadvantages have been expatiated in three sections: a) insufficient reading amounts caused by lack of reading time; b) out-of-order and inefficient status ofreading; c) the reasons for the above status.Thirdly, countermeasures. a) Abolish examination-oriented education system, give reading time back to students so that they can have enough time for comprehensive reading; b) create favorable reading atmosphere, let students read by themselves; c) emphasize teachers' directions. Due to the out-of-order and inefficient status of after-school reading, it's desirable for teachers to give proper guidance and relevant helps.To conclude, the importance of after-school reading of middle school students are emphasized again. The status is not at all optimistic, so wider attentions should be paid to this problem. Parents, community and educators are appealed to work together for a new after-school reading complexion of middle school students.
