On July 2001 and April 2003, Curriculum Standard of Chinese Language for Compulsory Education (for experiment) and Curriculum Standard Of Chinese Course For Ordinary Senior Secondary Schools (for experiment) were issued by National Ministry of Education, which raise concrete requirements to extracurricular reading for middle school students, and recommend corresponding recommended bibliography, including 12 contemporary literary masterpieces, three of which are for junior students, the rest for senior students. The emergency of"new curriculum standard"is the signal of new Chinese teaching inform, which extend to the masterpieces of Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Ba Jin, Cao Yu, Bing Xin, Zhu Ziqing. Even so, will the students read the twelve recommended contemporary literary masterpieces? How about their reading state? To what extent they will read? What are the barriers during their process of reading? With these questions, I visited many middle schools in Zibo, exchanged ideas with their leaders and teachers, and communicated with their students. Finally, the author investigates 2580 students in 9 middle schools by questionnaire, and analyzes the result by statistic. Results showed that"new curriculum standard"gives some new changes to current Chinese teaching; meanwhile many students have no time reading the literary masterpieces due to various reasons. The teachers and students still occupy themselves with the entrance examination of a high level. This paper illustrates the status quo of extracurricular reading in middle school by concrete data, and analyzes the reason from perspectives of education system, school institution, reading environment, attitude of the parents, teachers and students. They are: 1. Deficiency of reading time. 2. The ignorance of masterpieces reading by the students.3. The deficiency of book resource in middle school. 4. The heavy study burden of students. 5. The poor reading environment. At present, there are many barriers that influence the students to read contemporary literary masterpieces. 1. The Chinese teaching is narrowed down textbook teaching. 2. There are great differences between students'reading motivation and reading ability. Their motivations come from teacher's requirements, friends'influences and personal needs. 3. The guidance is lack of scientific.According to the results and analysis, this paper put forward some corresponding suggestions. On the one hand, the school should create the atmosphere of reading as follows: 1. The library should fully satisfy the reading needs of students. 2. The guidance should put the age character into consideration. 3. The school should recommend classical bibliography. 4. The school should enhance the scientific research on reading. 5. The school should set up a reading assessment mechanism system. On the other hand, the Chinese teachers should take some effective measures as follows: 1. to improve students'reading ability in classroom teaching. 2. to advocate reading aloud by creating reading atmosphere. 3. to enhance intensive reading and foster reading habit. 4. to instruct extracurricular reading and foster self-reading ability. 5. to guide the reading skills.Part three is the reflections initiated from the investment, i.e. how to shorten the distance between the middle school students and the literary masterpieces. The author puts forward views and carries out sufficient argument and analysis from three perspectives.
