Student assessment is an important part in the education evaluation and be attached attention to by the educators. Aiming at the declining graduate ratio of the undergraduates and the complaint of the taxpayers in 1980s, an discussion about the curriculum and teaching of undergraduates began to develop. From then on the government paid more attention to the education quality of undergraduates, and all kinds of evaluation organizations and famous scholars also explored the methods of the student assessment. All the factors accelerated new evaluation methods appearance. At the same time, the theory and practice of student assessment in our country just now started to develop. Even if the higher education in our country has entered the early massification of higher education, there still are some defects in the function, the methods and the valuators of the evaluation system. Based on the information about the subject, I selected five prevailing student assessment methods in US higher education in the 1980s to study. I will introduce and analyse them from the reasons of their appearance, the theory basis of them, the definition, the implement procedure, the advantage and the disadvantage etc. what's more, I will sum up the characteristics of these methods and forecast their current. The purpose of introducing American student assessment methods is to provide reference experiences for the innovation in our country. In our country, the daily student assessment methods are mainly the measures by the teachers themselves, but the most teachers haven't received the special training about student assessment; and there are some shortcomings in the comprehensive assessment for the students generally used by most universities. Therefore, I will review the situation of our country's student assessment system, and summarize the problems in it, compare the similar condition between our country and theirs. At last, I will draw a conclusion whether we can use the American experience and how to use them.
