For centuries as a special mode of Chinese cultural education in the old days, The Academic Schools of Classical learning which have lasted for the Ming to Qing dynasty had a significant effect upon the traditional civilizations on the Wuhan area.After the Opium War, the Wuhan area opened up when the China has faced with unexpected turn of events during three thousands years. With the stern modernization of the whole society, The Academic Schools of Classical learning on the Wuhan area also have begun to reform. They not only should be made good use of for they are important resources of educational development, but also be transformed for they are resistance of learning from the West.This dissertation investigates the reform and decline of the Academic Schools of Classical learning including traditional schools and ecclesial schools on the Wuhan area, taking Lianghu and Jingxin school for example. In spite of undergoing a long and even painful process, including newbuilding, rebuilding and changing academies of classical learning into schools, the reform of Academy of Classical Learning on the Wuhan area made a great contribution to the development of the new-style education. It was an important step in China modern education history. The educational reform on the Wuhan area preceded the whole country at that time.With the development of traditional schools, ecclesial schools on the Wuhan area came to transform a few new institution for middle or higher learning, and became the important component of new educational system.Although the old systems of academies of classical learning ended, the existing organizations with their styles and traditions did their best to serve the local culture and education.
