The study is designed based on the following reflections: (1) Can traditional quantitative student evaluation approach really evaluates student proficiency in chemical learning? (2) Does the approach fit in with the needs of student development and the requirements of evaluation in process learning and the values of affect and attitude; (3) How to define qualitative evaluation? Is it a thought or an evaluation mode with specific connotation? How to construct the qualitative student evaluation system? And How to apply it to chemical teaching?After literature review, the study firstly investigates the current state of student evaluation in chemical teaching by means of questionnaire and interview, and then secondly elaborates the theory and its connotation of qualitative students evaluation approach. Thirdly, the study focuses on constructing a system of qualitative student evaluation, and lastly discusses the strategy of applying it to chemical teaching in middle school.The system of qualitative students evaluation approach constructed in the study not only enriches educational evaluation theory, but also provides practical techniques to apply to chemical teaching, which has immediate significance and practical value.
