Thinking in a creative way is typical of creative people. Research in this realm is gaining increasing attention from psychologists and educationalists. Studies reveal that writing practice can foster students' creative thinking. For all the noticeable headway made in writing-oriented teaching and the improvement in students' writing skill, they still fall short of the Criteria on the Chinese Language Teaching. In writing a composition, the students are cramped in imagination and they simply follow the beaten track. The uniformity in style demonstrates the stereotyped mode of thinking. This trend highlights the necessity to foster students' creative thinking in writing practice. In light of psychology, pedagogy and relevant theory relating to the Chinese language and its teaching methodology as well as the experiences based on the teaching of Chinese, this paper explores the approach to foster students' creative imagination as a way to obtain result-oriented teaching and elevate students' writing skill.Drawing upon the precious research work in this field, this paper probes into the connotation, mechanism, similarity and dissimilarity of creative thinking to other modes of thinking. It brings to light the relationship between creative thinking and writing practice. The necessity and feasibility of adopting this approach are also expounded. The paper sets forth the principles and some specific approaches to enhance students' creative thinking in the writing classes of middle school, encompassing a series of exercises in creative thinking, writing skill and a few key elements in teaching approaches.
