This is a report on a study of vocabulary learning strategy training for rural senior middle school students. The purpose of the study was to see the effectiveness of strategy training in middle schools. Two types of English learning strategies were involved in the study, namely, the strategies for learning and the strategies for using. The choice of them was based on the analysis of a questionnaire designed to tap the students' present use of strategies and also on the practical demand by the syllabus. The training lasted about one year, and activities were provided for the practice of the new strategies in the similar situations. Pre- and post-measurements were used in the evaluation of the training. The result suggested that the training was effective to vocabulary learning, especially isolated learning. However, it is not so effective to vocabulary using.
