Based on the theory of cooperative learning, this paper is an attempt to guide the students to have grammar learning. It aims at improving students' English competence and effect of ELT classroom. The author of this paper has applied the theory of cooperative learning to teach English grammar in a senior high school and made satisfactory achievement. In the course of traditional English grammar teaching, the teachers often focus on explaining the facts of language points with the consolidation of a variety of practice. What the students bear in mind is just the facts which are solidified, they can not reach a good application in various situation. Nevertheless, cooperative learning can effectively put the end of such time-consuming and ineffective situation. Cooperative learning lays the emphasis on the joint participation and cooperation between the teacher and students as well as students and students and holds the idea that language learning is a dynamic, developing and integrating process. Through mutual participation and cooperation, it can develop an equal, friendly, harmonious and lively atmosphere in the classroom, which can stimulate students to desire for new knowledge. Meanwhile , the teachers can help students have a good mastery and application of new language through the ways of listening ,speaking, reading, writing and practicing so as to finish the teaching task and effectively improve the teaching effect.Nowadays, cooperative learning is one of new methods required by present new curriculum reform of foundation education in our country. State Department made out the document on the decision of reform and development of foundation education, in which it firmly indicates:" encourage cooperative learning, enhance mutual communication between students, develop each other together, and promote the development of learning and teaching." ELT in Chinese Secondary school is now facing the curriculum reform, which focuses on the transformation from the traditional emphasis on language points to emphasis on language skills at present, in addition, it requires to build a integrated system of using language competence based on the following aspects : language skills, language points, emotional attitude , learning strategies and cultural awareness. Meanwhile, it advocates the democratic and cooperative learning approach as well as promotes the development of students' creativity and practical skills. So as an Englishteacher,we should venture to try new ideas, to make innovation, put theories into practice, and try out suitable teaching methods.This paper tries to answer the new curriculum reform, it begins with the fact that students have a poor performance in practice and reach the conclusion that all of it originates in the poor mastery of grammar or can not put into practice flexibly, which results in the low efficiency of most ELT classrooms in China. So how to guide students to learn effectively and how to learn is the first question that the teacher should answer. In the author's opinion, cooperative learning can put an end to such embarrassing situation, it is necessary to adopt such teaching method in ELT classroom because of its specific advantages. Chapter Two of this paper gives a detailed exploration of the theory of cooperative .Active participation of the students is a precondition for cooperation;positive interdependence and individual responsibility of the group members are crucial to cooperative learning. As it proves, the cooperative learning environment contributes to the absorption and application of language points for students.This paper focus on Chapter Three, which carried out the experiment of cooperative learning of grammar teaching SEFC attached with a teaching process giving a specific explanation. The subjects are the students from two classes of the second year students of Wuhan Guanshan Middle School. By contrast with the effect of the two class teaching activity, one is plain followed by traditional method and the other is experimental carried out by cooperative learning theories. The experimental class is obviously superior to the other.Some specific suggestions and inspiration are given in the end on the English grammar teaching practice of cooperative learning. It is hoped that this paper will be of help to middle school English teachers in the course of their teaching practice.
