China classical poetry (including poems, ci poems, and Yuan verse) is worth profound research. It not only represents ancient social lives but shows emotions and wishes of our ancestors, which made up the soul and character of our nation, supporting the spirit of Chinese nation' s. To make research of it would not only promote the progress of China society but enhance its moral and cultural level, presenting its exclusive function. Therefore, to inherit classical poetry and absorb nutrition from them are quite important for the popularization of the excellent culture of Chinese nation. However, looking back on the Chinese teaching in secondary school for nearly half a century, the teaching of classical poetry is just an appendage to Chinese teaching, always neglected. Research and materials on the system of poetry teaching are also dissatisfyingly little. Based on the features of poetry and teaching needs, this thesis is trying to apply content analysis, investigation method, and comparative analysis to discuss the teaching of classical poetry from perspectives like the significance of classical poetry teaching in the secondary school, retrospect and introspection, analysis of current teaching situation, and new methods for teaching. During my facing with the history and actuality, I found that for this half a century, the traditional "poetry teaching" could hardly be continued any longer. I proposed in this thesis that "the teaching of classical poetry should be oriented to the students, and advocated initiative, cooperative and probing learning methods; and open and active courses of classical poetry should be built; also the qualifications in classical poetry of the teachers should be enhanced, so that the quality in teaching classical poetry could be promoted.
