After Ministry of Education promulgated THE ADVICE ON PROACTIVELY PROMOTING ENGLISH COURSE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL and THE CRITERIA FOR ENGLISH CURRICULUM , English has become a compulsory subject in primary school, and the teaching and learning of Primary English has become the overall objective for basic education. Nowadays more and more attention of the public has been focused on how the Primary English is going.. English courses have gradually being set up in primary schools in Shashi district since the fall of 2001. Four years have gone, what is the current situation? What have we achieved ? What can we learn form it ? And is there any problem? Through questionnaire, this paper describes and analyzes the following six aspects of the current situation of Primary English : the opening up of the English courses, the teaching staff, the utilization of teaching resources, the students' learning, the evaluation of teaching and learning and the linking up between primary and middle school English. Based upon results of the research, I put forward several reasonable suggestions that could provide powerful theoretical evidence for the administration of Primary English in our district and thereby improve the quality of Primary English teaching.
