This paper, based on an understanding of features and value of poetry, deal mainly with the goals, value and level of poetry teaching in high schools. It also combines related studies with characteristics of high school students and teaching practice in high schools, seeking to find where poetry teaching, cultural spirit, human development and calling of the age meet, to provide reasons for a poetic life for humanity and search for a hopeful way to teach poetry.Offering a clear picture of how poetry teaching was and is doing, the paper first explain features and value of poetry, thinking that poetry thinks about wisdom, praises beauty of life, expresses feelings in classical ways and encourages personality. Then the paper explains the goals of teaching poetry in high schools and places poetry teaching in high schools at the level of getting the students to feel poetry. After this, the paper explains the feasibility of poetry teaching in high school based on the features of poetry and imagination, feelings, personality and ideas of beauty of high schools. At the conclusion, the paper puts forward four basic principles to be followed in the course of high-school poetry teaching, namely, Enjoyment, Freedom and Tolerance, Individual Creativity and Beauty as well as several effective teaching tactics in the areas of reading and writing poetry.
