This paper is inspired by the success resulting from the long tradition of teaching informal-essay writing and other writing-teaching methods in Changde No. 1 High School. It seeks to explore the characteristics of informal essays and why students enjoy writing them and pursues an efficient writing-teaching model fit for high school students. This paper proposes teaching informal-essay writing instead of the conventional way of teaching writing. To study the feasibility of the idea, the author did a two-year experiment with teaching informal-essay writing. After a broad survey and a contrast study, it proved quite feasible and very efficient. The paper tries to analyze the result of the experiment from different angles—studying the students' desire to express themselves from the psychological angle, studying the value and significance of informal-essay writing from the angle of the art of writing and explaining the characteristics of native-language learning from the linguistic angle. It reveals that in informal-essay writing students' desire to write is better satisfied and they have more freedom in choosing what to write. It's also demonstrated that as a result of improved evaluation students feel more encouraged to write, or rather, they like writing eventually rather than hate it, as was the case before the experiment. Additionally, this paper tries to analyze the function of informal-essay writing, that is, informal-essay writing helps a human develop in an all-round way. At the conclusion, it's pointed out what principles and strategies should be followed when teaching informal-essay writing.
