This thesis is intended to draw attention to a crucial and yet rather neglected aspectof communicative language skills "interaction", which seems to be the key of success inEnglish teaching and learning.Under current circumstances, the application of the interaction approach to Englishteaching lies in classroom interaction. This thesis first illustrates the status quo ofEnglish teaching in the senior high school and manifests the significance of the study. The first chapter deals with the concept of "interaction", examines the relevantresearches and provides an overview of the current Chinese classroom interaction, explaining the importance of interaction approach in English classes. The secondchapter poses an eclectic interaction approach hypothesis in English teaching as well asits theoretical basis. It also gives us the reasons for presenting the hypothesis. Someimportant principles are introduced in the third chapter as well as some importantinteraction patterns and suggested ways to conduct the eclectic interaction approach. Inorder to test the hypothesis, a teaching experiment is presented in this chapter too. Theteaching experiment included observations of in-class activities and out-of-classactivities. The subjects were divided into two parts: one part was the experimental classand the other was the control class. The experimental class adopted an eclecticinteraction teaching approach while the control class used a traditional teaching method. After a period time of implementation, a questionnaire was given to the subjects inorder to get their response to the interaction approach. In addition, an interview withsome subjects provided more reactions to the interaction approach. The subjects' testperformances were compared at the end of the semester. From the series of comparison,we got a brief summary of the teaching experiment. Some discussions are provided inChapter Four which include advantages and disadvantages of the eclectic interactionapproach and some challenges as well as feasibility in implementing the approach. Thelast part presents the conclusion. Under the current situation, the interaction teachingapproach still has a long way to go. As English teachers, we should actively study anduse this new method and reform the traditional teaching method so as to attain the goalof language learning and improve the teaching quality.
