Since 1960s,postmodernism which is the most influential cultural ideological trend in the modern west started to spread rapidly and it has been prevalent in philosophy, sociology, art, religion and so on, as well as in education. Post-modern educational thought which is a part of the postmodern ideological trend is formed on the basis of people's introspection of modernity of education. The masters of postmodernism, such as Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michel Foucault, Paulo Freire, Richard Rorty and so on all expressed their ideas of the weaknesses of the present education. This thesis, based on the arguments of these postmodern thinkers about the teacher, expounds the rationality of the existence of the teacher, his duty of imparting knowledge, the authority of the teacher and so on in postmodern background. It will critically deal with the most representative postmodern views of the teacher with Marxist materialistic interpretation of history, such as"the death of the teacher","the dispelling of the authority of the teacher","the collapse of the traditional view of knowledge","the extinction of schools"and so on with theoretical analysis and questioning of the reality. It will affirm the rationality and value of the teacher, and at the same time, it will close the problems and weaknesses of them and provide the answers to the following problems for teachers in theory, such as how to realize themselves, how to enter educational practice and so on.This thesis is composed of three parts. The first part is the introduction, which includes why such a topic is chosen and research methods and so on. The introduction will also explain the basic concepts, such as teacher, view of the teacher and so on, the background and characteristics of postmodernism and its main influence on education. The second part is the main body, which first expounds the views of the teacher of the three postmodern representatives, and then questions the reality from the three following questions,"Whether the teacher is still needed and what kind of teacher is needed?","Does the teacher need to impart knowledge to his student and what knowledge should be imparted?","Should the teacher have authority and what authority should he have?". The aim is to re-explain the rationality of the existence of the teacher, his duty of imparting knowledge and the authority of the teacher. The third part is the conclusion, which deals with the rationality and weakness of postmodern view of the teacher as well as its enlightenment and instruction to the present educational reform.
