The difficulties in English teaching are English language and words, which are expressedin the form of signs. Especially for people who are used to hieroglyph, complicated Englishsentences and words that consist of 26 letters actually cannot be learned easily. In Englishteaching, to the culture foundation, which matches with the contents of teaching, is a possibleway to emphasize language learning atmosphere, besides the qualities and teaching methodsof teachers. Therefore, culture foundation in English teaching is worth studying in practicalteaching.This paper mainly studies three parts: the understanding of culture in English teaching,why we study them, and how to express them. With the idea of seeking after the truth whilechanging the concepts, we try to open a new window for the target of English teaching. Weshould be free from the prejudice of focus on knowledge rather than ability and make it clearthat is the dialectical relation among knowledge, ability and quality: knowledge is surfacelayer while ability is inner layer, and quality is the core. So this paper attempts to explain thatEnglish teaching plays the same role as other subjects. In fact, learning knowledge can helpthe development of ability;while increasing ability also can help acquire knowledge, and thenobtaining quality.This paper is also based on psychology: thinking is based on surface concepts in order tofinish the thought process by analyzing, judging and reasoning. Teaching and learning arethoughts activities, and then both need surface concepts to practice. The aim of research onthe understanding of culture in English is to set up English teaching culture foundation withrich, vivid surface concepts;therefore, English learning can be upheld by thoughts.This paper focuses on mode of knowledge and ability, which is supported by abundantculture foundation and people who has skilled English ability in order to seek for thecombination of language teaching theory, sociology, humanities and arts (that is theunderstanding of culture in English teaching).In a word, this paper explores the theory and teaching practice that are English teachingwith culture foundation in order to develop English language education.
