Zhang Baixi(1847-1907), Whose alias was Qian Zhai or Wen da , was bora in Changsha ,Hunan Province. He was an influential minister of late Qing Dynasty and an outstanding educator in modern society. He advocated learning from the West and carried out a series of teaching practices that were of great importance to the modernization of china's education., such as studying out the educational system for neoteric China and reconstructing Capital College.Based on a materialistic point of view, this paper carries out a systematic analysis of Zhang Baixi's education activities, and hence offers a review of Zhang Baixi's historical status and contribution, striking to offer a profitable reflection of china's education reformation.This dissertation consists 5 parts:The first part gives an introduction to the life experience and the background of education practices.of Zhang Baixi. On the basis of the above paortion, this part analyzed the background in which he participated in education reformation by looking into his official career, social situation and the status quo of Qing Dynasty's education.The second part introduces Zhang's practices in education reform, and then investigates and reviews on his education activities, such as reconstructing Capital College, advocating the education system innovation of Qing Dynasty and innovating the system of selecting people with ability.The third part probes into Zhang's historical contribution and status to the modernization of china education. On the basis of analyzing Zhang's education innovation, this part points out Zhang's historical contribution and status in neoteric education system, higher education system, normal school education system and educational administration. And this part also indicates the deficiency of Zhang's education thoughts.
