In China, with the development of conducting the quality education, especially along with the further progress of the New Course reform, the professional quality of English teachers has become one of the debated issues. The school-based research is the effective approach to strengthen the professional quality.How can English teachers in a middle school conduct the school-based research? The study aims to make a research on approaches and methods of the school-based research in English language teaching. There are three aspects this study aims to focus on:First, the school-based research is its signpost in the reform of the basic education, English teachers should understand the importance so that they will take an active role in the school-based research. Second, it is important for English teachers to understand and to be equipped with the school-based research methods. Third, the school-based research needs a support environment so that the teachers can conduct the research under difficult situations: such as over-loaded class hour and large classes, etc.
