On Education Of Public Morality

There are few researches on education of public morality in the study field of schooling, neither are the effective measures. Because of the inadequate understanding of the education of public morality, it is hard to bring this program into effect. "What is it that leads to substituting education of private morality for that of public morality?" and "how to promote the implement of education of public morality in the classroom" are the central themes of this dissertation.First of all, the traditional idea on moral education have been summarized and analyzed, which is regarded as education of priva.te morality focusing on the self-improvement and relationship of acquaintance. While the transformation of modern society needs new moral system and the change of people's moral idea, which would be called public morality. In the second part, the maintenance of the basic moral acquirement in the education of public morality has been discussed. To carry out the program of public morality is to firstly train a proper mode of behavior in the public life. However, it is only the person with the internal moral character could have the ability to conduct him/herself morally. In consequence, it is analyzed that education on public morality is also the education for moral fundamental rooted in the principle of commonweal and social justice as well, by exploring the alterant understanding of both the relationship between the public sphere and the private sphere, and the relationship between individual and society in Chinese history. Finally, the difficulties existed in the practice field have also been treated to show that education of public morality still has a long way to go.As a new part of school moral education, education of public morality is not only the training of behavior but also the realization of relative moral principles, which make it essentially a development of judgment and thinking.
