Since the 1970s, research interest in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) has shifted to students' learning, and the importance of learning strategies has been recognized. More and more scholars are paying attention to strategy training among foreign language learners. Foreign language learning strategy research began in China in the early 1980s. The original aim of strategy training was to teach unsuccessful language learners the methods of successful learners. Research on how teachers helped students grasp effective learning strategies in English learning, how teachers carried out proper strategy instruction and how teachers conducted special learning strategy training when necessary has been made, but it still lacks depth to a certain extent. Therefore, learning strategy training needs further research. The present paper studies the effect of strategies-based instruction on reading comprehension. As we all know, improving students' reading abilities is one of the objectives of senior English teaching. But the fact is that many senior high school students' reading abilities are far below where they should be, and discrepancy between students turns to be greater. This has drawn close attention of many linguists and researchers working in this field. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of reading strategy instruction and to illustrate the validity of reading strategy instruction. The instructional framework is Integrating Strategic Reading in L2 Instruction (ISRI) put forward by Joy Janzen and Fredericka L.Stoller (1998).An exploratory study was conducted with 98 students in Senior Two in ShangRao County Middle School in JiangXi Province.Based on theoretical analyses, questionnaires, the pre-test and post-test and an interview, this paper analysed the reading ability of senior high school students and their reading strategy use. The author demonstrated the importance and validity of reading strategy training. This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One talks about the background and significance of this study. The framework of this paper is introduced in this chapter. Chapter Two introduces related theories on which this study is based, including the definitions and classifications of language learning strategy, reading strategy, reading theory and strategy training. Chapter Three demonstrates how the study is conducted, including the research design, the selection of subjects, instruments, the procedures of data collection and analysis. A pre-test, a post-test, two questionnaires and an interview were conducted in the experimental class and the control class. The strategy training was made up of three stages, lasting...
