English vocabulary is a foundation of English study, and one of three major key elements of the language. One of the subject matters which the high school students meet in English study is vocabulary .The importance of vocabulary in English learning and teaching has already caused the understanding and definite of the domestic and international experts. However, about English teaching in middle schools , the question of the time-consuming and poor efficiency exists. Students complain the words remembered are easy to forget. Teachers think the study of words is students' own thing, not carrying on effectual vocabulary teaching. As a result, the weakness of vocabulary teaching influences students' English study. As a fundamental and important part of language, vocabulary is being studied by many foreign language teachers and researchers from different perspectives. Many of which make much contribution to the teaching of vocabulary. There are not many empirical researches which study both vocabulary teaching and learning .The present research attempts to explore the overall pattern of both English vocabulary teaching and learning strategies by some Chinese teachers and students. This thesis has carried out two kinds of investigations, pointing out the importance and necessity of vocabulary teaching, and proposing some useful learning strategies for students. A way to solve the present time-consuming problem is the joint efforts of the teachers and students. Furthermore, the author makes suggestions on concrete vocabulary teaching and learning including effective mnemonics, cultivating attitude and motivation and teaching vocabulary with computers. It's possible for students to make a good command of vocabulary under teachers' guidance as well as their effort.
