Competitive swimming is one of the basic events in modern Olympic Games, occupying a pivotal position not only in Olympic Games but also in Asian Games or National Games. The achievements of athletic swimming made in these games have direct effects on the placing of a nation, a province, a city or a region in multi-event games. The setback the Chinese swimming team unexpectedly suffered in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games is undoubtedly an unforgettable lesson. One main reason is that the nurturing of reserve force of our athletic swimming events is to some extent lagging behind the reform of the market economy, affecting and hindering the development of athletic swimming of our country. As a typical link of our nurturing model of swimming events, the second-line swimmers are a force to be reckoned with in the development of the athletic swimming of our country, the nurturing, training and channeling of the second-line swimmers, to some extent, will exert direct influence the achievements made by the athletic swimming team of our country.Shanghai is among the cities in which swimming was developed early and is enjoying a greater popularity. Our swimming has long been the leader in the world, and has structured a rather consummate training system which links the first-line, the second-line and the third-line swimming teams,. It has formed a pyramid-like system for training and channeling athletic talents and is typical of its kind. However, with the upcoming of the market economy, Shanghai's second-line swimmer nurturing model has encountered with some problems which are caused by the combined effect of some influential factor.In order to get known and master the problems existing in the nurturing of the second-line swimmer and make the solutions so as to ensure the healthy and reasonable development of Shanghai's athletic swimming, this paper has made a research in the 8 second-line swimming teams in hope that it will provide detailed factual data for the Shanghai's nurturing of its second-line swimmers.
