Developing the ability of listening and speaking is one of the most important tasks in English language teaching. In 2002, our school opened a new specialty — Air Service, which brought us unexpected difficulties in listening and speaking teaching. It is really a great challenge for us teachers of English to help the mixed-level students with little motivation to improve their English to a comparatively ideal level in a period of one year and half. We have to adjust the old teaching method which focuses on the grammar and seek for a suitable way to reach the required goals. That is why I choose to tell English stories in class to arouse students' interest and develop the ability of listening and speaking.Telling English stories in class is in accordance with the rule of language learning. It can not only make a class active, but arouse students' interest and motivation in English language learning. Meanwhile, encouraging students to participate in the activities of telling stories can help the students concentrate on what they are learning in class, and this will result in the improvement of learning efficiency. Gradually, students are able to understand the stories and like to read and collect interesting stories actively in their spare time, and then read or tell their own stories in class with little shyness. With the help of the teacher'swell-designed activities, students experience success one after another, confidence is built up, self-efficacy increased and interest fostered. In the pleasant atmosphere, students' anxiety level is lowered, which is helpful to maximize the language acquisition.Through over one year's effort, compared with the scores of Class One and Class Two, the scores of Class Three are 17.8 and 14.6 percentages higher than those of Class One and Class Two respectively. As the experiment result proves, telling stories is an effective way to develop students' interest, confidence and ability of listening and speaking. But it is a pity that telling stories, which is regarded most popular with students, is not effectively and widely carried out in some schools in the City of Huhhot. I hope to take this opportunity to popularize telling stories in English language teaching and help students to improve their listening and speaking in a friendly atmosphere.
