This paper mainly deals with the common and true situation of the supervisory relationship based on the frequently reported issues of conflict and disharmony. Thus, the main question of this paper will be listed as: what is the main situation of the supervisory relationship during the education period and how the graduates perceive about the relationship they experienced.Based on the deep interview material from twelve graduates and three supervisors in a major university in Shanghai, the paper discusses the supervisory relationship from three dimensions: academic instruction, research project task and daily communication by qualitative research method. The paper further analyses the experience of the graduates through the awareness and feeling. In order to emphasize the cases representative four cases out of twelve, which are rich in information in one of the three analysis dimension, are selected and explored. The paper also analyses the reasons influencing the supervisory relationship including academic culture, the cultivation or exploitation on graduate, coaching type of the supervisor and the members of a supervisor coaching.Three grounded theories aim to explain the supervisory relationship, which are based on the deeply analyzed materials. Those are Rule of Importance, Rule of Match and Rule of Understanding. Rule of Important can be described as the supervisor play a different significant role during the different period of graduate education. Rule of Match means that whether the supervisory relationship can be kept in harmony is determined by the match of the desire and character of the supervisor and the graduate. Rule of Understanding says that the graduate tend to accept the reality by finding out the reasons of the problems when their desires on the supervisor are frustrated.
