The teachers' education is the basis of the primary education. In face of the new requirements for the reform and development of the teachers' education with the reformation of the basic education, we must meet the challenges and make the new breakthrough in this field.This study focuses on the professional growth of the elementary and middle school art teachers. As an inseparable part of the teachers' education system, the professional growth of the art teachers is closely related to its overall development.The following four parts are dedicated to the analysis and study of this subject matter.The first part comprises the detailed explanation of the basic concepts relevant to the professional growth of art teachers, such as major and profession, specialization and the teacher's specialization, the teachers' professional development, and the literature review on the previous studies in this field as well as the introduction to the pivot of this research. In the mean time, it is to explore the necessary qualities for the professional growth of the elementary and middle school art teachers and its influencing factors.Secondly, the questionnaires done by the middle school art teachers and pupils in Shanghai shows the status quo of the professional growth of the elementary and middle school art teachers and it is concluded that the elementary and middle school art teachers are in greatest need of the following three capacities, that is, the capacity of developing the resources of the art courses, the capacity of art appreciation and teaching and the capacity of art teaching appraisal. The reasons are to be analyzed in this part, too.Thirdly, it is proposed that multiple ways should be applied to improve the professional qualities of the elementary and middle school art teachers in order to change the status quo and accelerate their professional growth, such as the independent study of the art teachers, the study of the courses of Master's Degree in Education, the improvement of their appraisal ability, the participation in the distinguished artists' studios and the training of new courses etc.The last part is the perspective of the professional growth of the elementary and middle school art teachers.
