The present thesis serves as a preliminary study in the research of the application of the findings and assumptions of reading strategies to high school students. It attempts to investigate whether theoretical findings have found their ways into the classroom and thereby to draw some educational implications. The thesis moves from theory to investigation, then into educational implications. First it explores the theoretical framework for EFL reading, namely, an overall review of established theories and empirical studies on reading strategies and reading activities. This study consists of questionnaires and interviews for both teachers and students for the sake of finding out their perspectives on and their application of reading strategies in the process of teaching and learning. Next it presents the results of the study which shows that the necessity of teaching and learning reading strategies in the EFL reading process has been recognized by both teachers and students. However, the results also reveal that the outcome of strategy instruction is discouraging because most of the students cannot properly apply many of the reading strategies to their reading activities, that there are significant differences in the use of some individual strategy items among the students and that students of high frequency strategy use are usually good readers.Based on the findings, it is finally suggested that ineffective readers should be motivated to enhance their efforts to learn and practice using reading strategies in their reading activities.
