| With the transformation of the knowledge hierarchy from the traditional to the modern, there appeared, in the history of the 20th century Chinese culture, a group of academic institutions infused with modern academic ideology, methodology and way of operation. These modern institutions enlisted and cultivated a great number of excellent modern researchers on humanities, among which the Chinese Ancient Civilization Institute of Qing Hua University was an outstanding example. By employing the popular method of "historical portraiture", this essay takes Wu Mi and Chen Yin-que as two samples, aiming to analyse, from a specific angle, the cultural ideology, academic methodology and spiritual structure of the modern Chinese academic workers. In the course of my research, I try to take a so-called "sympathetic understanding" prospective, putting the subjects back into their specific historical context, so as to comprehend their thoughts and learning "at that specific time and place". |
