In order to enhance the comprehensive national strength and deepen the quality education further, the 8th basic education curriculum reform was carried out in our country at the beginning of the 21st century. During the reform, some new conceptions were put forward as follows, "learning the geography that is useful for life", "learning the geography that is useful for students' life-long development" , "structuring open geography curriculums" and so on. It was also pointed out that geography teaching should be adjusted to the requirement of social development, and students' environmental awareness as well as the sense of cooperation and competition should be developed. The inner values of the science of geography should be changed into the practical values, which will benefit both society and individuals. Being an important part of geography curriculums in the middle school, home geography is closely related to students' living surroundings, which embodies the concept of "Learning the geography", which is useful for life. Besides, home geography emphasizes the learning method of learning through life experience and experiences, and agrees with the conception of "changing geography learning methods". What's more, home geography not only pays much attention to making use of out-of-school curriculum resources and enlarges the study space for students, but also represents the concept of "structuring open geography curriculums". Above all, home geography plays a unique role in helping students get to know the surroundings where their school lies and use what they've learned, developing students' practical ability and getting students to develop continuously and love their country deeply. Therefore, the standard of geography curriculums advocates that home geography be considered as both an important course in which students can undertake comprehensive study and an important way to carry out the new curriculum reform in basic education.However, during the course of practical teaching home geography hasn't been paid enough attention to. A survey on junior schools in Lanzhou shows that home geography hasn't formed a system of its own. The reason lies in many aspects. One of the most important reasons is due to the lack of suitable geography textbooks. So this thesis is based on the study of the role of home geography in the course of geography curriculum reform. The emphasis is put on the writing of new textbooks that embody the spirit of the new curriculum and have its own readability. The author has attempted and written a home geography textbook—Landscape in Lanzhou.Chapter One is about the significance of the study and the methodology used in the study. Chapter Two is focused on the role of home geography in basic curriculum reform. In Chapter Three the author analyses the current situation and problems in present geography education in Lanzhou and puts forward some solutions. The Fourth Chapter is about how the home geography textbook is written. In the Fifth Chapter the author states the idea for writing the textbook Landscape in Lanzhou and lists the contents of the textbook.
