The outlanders in squatter settlements of Shanghai are an unnoticed marginal group in this international metropolis. The identities of this group are kind of complicated since besides the local residents living from one tradition to another, the outlanders consist of both peasants and non-peasants. They engage in different jobs, hard yet happy. They enjoy living here despite relatively hard conditions. However, as the reform and opening goes on, great changes have taken place in Shanghai and the construction of this city marches on greatly, which directly threatens the survival of the squatter settlements. They will sink into the history river in the near future. Here I want to make a research on the support system of outlanders who are living in the squatter settlements. At first, the system could be taken as two aspects, the outer system and the inner system; And then the inner system could be analyzed from two angles, one from the individual's point of view, the other is from the group's point of view.Through the case study and interviews and related documents review, the support system would be increasingly clear. The system construction and its forming process with relative theories and they would be studied to draw a conclusion. The support system also contributes to know more about the life of squatter settlements and enrich the support theories.
