The new reform curriculm of basic education advocates teachers' creative appliance of teaching material. The change of the function of teaching material inspires teachers to get rid of its constraint, to refrain from blind worship to and deep reliance on it, and to shift from "teaching it" to "using it to teach". The essence of modern education is not simply a convey of the knowledge on books, but a process of critically and creatively applying teaching material in accordance with a specific teaching situation, which may involve adjustment to and improvement of its content, the integration of its sources, and so on. Furthermore, teachers are no longer to passively accept the ready-made "teaching products" developed by experts, but are required to process and improve them in view of the specific teaching aim, the students' needs, and the actual teaching situation. Therefore, the theory of "the second development of teaching material" is advanced against the background of the transition of modern teachers' view on teaching programs and material.The purpose of the thesis is to attempt to change the traditional view on teaching material, to reflect the modern teaching concept, which is "student-oriented", and to try to make some reasonable adjustments to and some appropriate additions and deletions in the teaching material according to students' demand and cognitive ability. Through all of these, hopefully a new way of effectively and properly applying teaching material can be explored. Simultaneously, the thesis also aims at stimulating students' interest in English study, improving students' methods of study and teachers' teaching mode, as well as increasing the efficiency of English teaching in junior middle school.The thesis is divided into three parts.The first part is a general introduction to the documents. It touches on the achievements made by foreign teachers in the evolution and development of teaching material and the present situation of the research on the second development of teaching material in foreign countries, especially in some Euro-American developed countries.
