A Study Of Junior Middle School Student's Reading Strategries

This dissertation is an attempt to help junior middle school students to analyze all kinds of reading strategies and then consolidates these reading strategies during the elementary period of their studying English and meanwhile supplies some teaching suggestions to improve the existing teaching methods and skills of English reading.Chapter I is the theoretical basis of the whole dissertation. The author clarifies the concept of reading and as well as its theoretical basis. Then the author emphasizes the analysis of the reading process with the cognitive theory, clarifies studying strategies and reviews domestic and overseas research about studying strategies. Finally, a series of strategies about foreign language reading through studying strategies, namely reading strategies, is suggested.Chapter II is the demonstration part of this dissertation. In this chapter the author carries out an investigation about the present situation of junior middle students' using reading strategies. But before carrying out the investigation, the author firstly examines the requirements of English courses and then explains the reason of choosing junior middle school students as the subjects of this study. Finally, the author comes up with a number of proper teaching strategies for improving the students' reading competence. The whole investigation is divided into two parts. The first part is a questionnaire, which helps to learn about how junior students use reading strategies as a whole. The second part is a reading comprehension test, which helps to learn about the existing problems while students are doing the reading comprehension test and which strategies they have mastered and which they have not.In Chapter III the author puts forward up a number of proper suggestions about how to teach foreign language reading and reading strategies. (1) Change the concept of teaching; (2) Help cultivate a good reading habit; (3) Combine linguistic knowledge with cultural background; (4) Teach how to guess the meaning of a new word; (5) Pay attention to the importance of reasoning when explain an exam paper; (6) Train the speed of reading; (7) Give enough reading instructions after school.
