Study On The Scale Efficiency Of Institutions Of Higher Learning Based On The DEA

After the promulgation of the economic reform and the opening-up policy, the career of higher education in our country has had great progresses. Especially after the later 1990s, the scale of the higher education is continuously enlarged. The number of the students in institutions of higher learning is reached to 20 millions in 2004, and the higher education in our country became the largest scale of higher education in the world. However, the increasing rate of higher education expenses cannot satisfy the increasing rate of scale. So the lack of expenses becomes the bottleneck of the development of higher education.In the face of the present situation of the higher education, it has the positive effect to evaluating the scale economy of institutions of higher learning. The result of the evaluation can help the managements of universities involved to realize the stage of their returns of scale, and also can help them know the efficiency of the input resource. Therefore, the managements of universities should attach important to both the resource inputting and evaluating the scale economy and operating performance of universities, in order to respond in time by appropriately regulating the levels of the input and output items.Institutions of higher learning belong to the non-profit organizations, and have multiple input and output items. According to the characteristic, this thesis systematically analyses the problem of the return of scale and evaluates the economy of scale of universities in the means of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).
