Ernest L. Boyer (1928-1995) is regarded as a distinguished contemporary educationist in America. He once served as president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, United States Commissioner of Education and Chancellor of States University of New York. Boyer ever did thorough research in American education, concerning preschool education, primary education, higher education and lifelong education. He wrote many books and made a lot of reports on educating experience and further value of education. Some of them were regarded as milestones to American education. To some content, his profound influence shaped and reformed American and international understanding of education. This thesis chiefly introduces Boyer's life and background, and focuses on his views on primary education and higher education."Ready to learn"is especially stressed in primary education. On higher education, teaching quality, the mission of scholarship and education of undergraduates in American research universities are research priorities. At the end, based on Chinese educational reform, following educational laws are drawn: make every child"Ready to learn"; individuality and generality should be equally stressed in education; students'speaking and writing abilities should be greatly improved ; create integrated core; higher education should be open; education is a systematic project. Above all, the writer purposes to search for theoretical instruction and practical use for reference to improve Chinese educational reform.
