The Study Of The Relationship Between Androgyny And Social Adaptability Of High School Students

Gender Differences was launched in the 19th century. In 1960s, the theory of cognitive development and social learning theory have made great advances on the research of gender roles. Rossi raised "androgyny" in 1964,which means one could get both traditional masculinity and female temperament. In 1974,basing on the standpoint which suggest masculine and feminine temperaments are two different dimentional structures. S. Bem workouted the Bem Sex Role Inventory and the reaearches of androgyny began. The results showed that androgyny individuals get rid of the straitjacket of traditional gender role norms, and breakthrough the context set by social stereotypes. Their adaptation is highly flexible. they could actively conform to the surrounding,regulate and change the surrounding, eventually attain to harmonious relations and equilibrium state between individual and social environment in the process of the interaction of individual and social environment. Good social adaptation also give them physical and mental health and good personality development. However, later studies abroad raised that masculine individuals have better social adjustment and better mental heath, which raised some controversy. Most research has been targeted at the university students, but the high school students actually have basic gender roles and can also be studied. And if the high school students has good mental health and social adaptability, they will have less adjustment problems when they will enter university.This study collected 348 high school students,and used BSRI Amendment,SCL-90 and social adaptability Scale on secongary school. The study was mainly from the following four aspects: the first,l investigated the distribution of gender roles. Secondly,I compared androgyny individuals and other types of individuals in the mental health differences to verify whether the androgyny individuals are of the best mental health; I compared androgyny individuals and other types of individuals in society adaptability to verify whether the androgyny individuals have the best adaptability. Fourth,I explored good mental health and social adjustment of androgyny individuals is subject to masculinity or female temperament. Conclusion of the study is: (1) In all students, androgyny accounted for 36.8%.masculine accounted for 14.4%, feminine accounted for 16.1%, Undifferentiated accounted for 32.8%. (2) androgyny individuals of gender roles and other types of individuals in the mental health on various factors were significantly different. Androgyny individuals of mental health do not have significant difference between grades and schools. (3) Androgyny of gender roles and other types of individuals in social adaptability of four components, namely the psychological advantage, psychological energy, interpersonal adjustment and mental flexibility demonstrated extremely significant difference; androgyny of gender roles and other types of individuals in social adaptability 14 factors also have significant differences. Androgyny scores best in the individual's social adaptability. Androgyny individuals have differences of grades and schools in the interpersonal adjustment scale. There are differences of school in mental flexibility subscales. (4) For androgyny individuals, masculinity has a significant negative correlation with interpersonal-sensitive factor and the mental factor. Regression analysis showed that interpersonal sensitivity and psychosis forecast mainly from the masculine temperament. The psychological advantage and psychological energy are mainly from masculine temperament; Masculinity hours of self-confidence, initiative, and the ability to challenge, flexible, optimistic forecasts considerable; Female temperament hours vitality and social acceptance.Combining data analysis results, the study also selected several students to do in-depth interviews, understanding adaptability to the situation and the level of psychological health of different gender roles. I analysis their certainty of own ability, their coping style when facing difficulties, emotional regulation means, and psychological state after the setbacks suffered,etc.Finally, according to research findings, I advocate the personality development of androgyny .And I think we could do different training programs with the efferts of the parents, themselves and schools.
