Teaching material, which is the embodiment of syllabus and a resort of teaching, has a great effect on attaining teaching's objectives. Elementary school Chinese, as a basis of compulsory education, plays an important role in fostering the ethical qualities and scientific qualities of students; expanding our motherland's excellent culture; and improving the entire national quality. Chinese is also an implemental discipline, which exerts a further-reaching impact on learning the other courses better.Previous Chinese teaching material is called a "textbook", the compiler of which focuses on how to be good for the teaching, but not considering the learning. Nowadays, more than ten teaching materials are not the case. Now teaching material is not only "textbook" but also "learning book". And the "learning book" is more important. The compiler concentrates not only on the advantage of teaching, but also on the need to be good for students' self-learning. The elementary school Chinese textbook of the second stage of curriculum reform in Shanghai (test textbook) has been utilized in an experiment in the over 150 base schools of teaching reform in September, 2001.Basing on absorbing the theory and practice of the present elementary school Chinese textbook, the author strives to sum up the compiling experience of Shanghai textbooks objectively; refine and summarize Shanghai textbooks' characteristics; point out the weak points; and submit the actual feasible idea and suggestion of modifying textbook for future, by way of analyzing and researching the new textbooks' content key element and compiling system.The thesis can be divided into five chapters in total. In the first chapter, the author describes the development of textbook compiling theory from vertical angle from which we may perceive the history of elementary school Chinese textbook compiling that inspires the thinking of author. In the second chapter, the author narrates the compiling notion of abroad textbook from transverse angle. The author also analyzes detailedly the elementary school Chinese textbook (compiled according to curriculum standard) starting from Xizhou to present which has experienced mainly four stages. In the second chapter, the author finds out the guiding ideology and principle of the compiling of the elementary school Chinese textbook of the second stage of curriculum reform in Shanghai (test textbook). In the third chapter, the author concretely elaborates the compiling notion, content key element and arranging way of the elementary school Chinese textbook of the second stage of curriculum reform in Shanghai (test textbook). The test textbook have been reformed in displaying way and the editor. This reform has brought about the changes of teaching material concept, urging teaching material to move ahead toward modernity more and more. In the fourth chapter, The author analyzes the shortcomings of displaying way of test textbook, pointing out "the people-oriented" which is the essential of teaching material. In the fifth chapter, the author evaluates the test textbook, raising several worthy questions for discussing and submitting the actual feasible idea and suggestion of modifying textbook for future. A set of ideal teaching material needs the efforts of compilers, entire teachers, the Chinese educational workers, even the relevant discipline researchers. It can be anticipated that the prosperity of teaching material construction reform will definitely arrive as the accelerating pace of teaching material reform.
