Nowadays, the world's economic development and the scientific and technological progress are mainly relying on high-qualified people. With the development of economic construction, the students'overall quality becomes the focus of concern. However, the traditional approach, which evaluates college students'overall qualities by the weights average of their achievements, can not be adapted to the needs of the society any longer. Therefore, how to conduct the scientific evaluation on college students'overall qualities becomes an important issue. The principal components analytic method (PCA) is a statistical method of pattern recognition, in which several fewer targets are selected according to the actual need from the new group of overall targets reconstructed from the original targets to reflect the original information content as far as possible. The method has many merits. First, it can reduce the dimension of multi-variables data system while guaranteeing the least loss of original data information; second, it can simplify the characteristics of statistical figures in the variable system, which helps to discover the universal laws and special phenomena in the complex mass data group, thus improving the efficiency in analyzing data messages; third, in the comprehensive appraisal functions based on PCA, the main weights are variance contribution rate and can be made objective and reasonable to overcome defects of personally determining weights in some evaluation methods; fourth, the comparatively standard computation of PCA makes it easy to be operated on the computer by making use of special software. The dissertation expounds in detail PCA, which is adopted to evaluate the comprehensive qualities of university students. Through the cognitive analysis of the qualities of the present college students, together with the need of their all-around development, the evaluation target system covers four qualities: moral quality, professional proficiency, cultural quality, and quality in physical and psychological health. To measure each quality successfully, corresponding evolutional methods and some questionnaires are designed; moreover, the specific implementation and applications of them are explained in detail. With PCA, use MATLAB software, several fewer targets are selected according to the variance contribution rate and accumulated variance contribution rate from the new group of overall targets reconstructed from the original targets to reflect the original information content as far as possible and find out several major components to assess every student comprehensively and objectively, which in turn enables the school to have a reasonable knowledge of students in terms of some important qualities and abilities. PCA has overcome defects in the weights average of students'achievements and make a thorough and scientific evaluation of college students'comprehensive qualities. This is not only suitable for the educational workers to adjust training programs and educational methods according to the actual situations of the students, but also helpful for students to overcome personal shortcomings and make self-improvement comprehensively through further exercises and study. To sum up, PCA is a scientific and feasible evaluation system to measure college students'comprehensive qualities in modern times. The dissertation adopted by the university based on PCA integrated evaluation for undergraduate capabilities system to be in practice to constantly improve and refine.
