The Research On The Current Situation Of College Orienteering Of Hubei And Its Developing Strategies

Since the quality-oriented education has been popularized in China, the physical education (P. E.) course in the general colleges and universities requires more demands and reforms. It means that we must update the teaching theory, change the traditional teaching pattern and take full advantages of the existing natural resources. As a newly, fashionable outdoor sport activity involving a person being close to the nature and challenging himself/herself, the orienteering has a good effect on the participator's physical and psychological health and his or her ability to adapt to the society.Carrying out the orienteering teaching does not only dovetail with the idea"Taking health as the first place"on the Guiding Program of Physical Education Course in General College and Universities, but also fully meets the demands of P. E. course that combine and make good use of the intramural and extramural resources. Meanwhile, the orienteering teaching has achieved the five goals in the Guiding Program that enable the students to participate in the sports activities, strengthen their sports skills, built up their body and mental health and enhance their adaptation to the society.The author takes the orienteering athletes and coaches who participated in the Ninth Hubei College Sports Meet as an object and comprehensively adopts questionnaire investigation, expert's interview and statistics methods to prove his points. Base on the plentiful bibliography, the paper analyzes the current situation of college orienteering in Hubei province and its influenced and restricted factors. Furthermore, it puts forward the corresponding developing strategies. The research shows that:1. The development of college orienteering in Hubei province is unbalanced. On one hand, most excellent players are just assembled in a few colleges, while others are in lower level. On the other hand, the sex of participators is lack of balance, male students are obviously better than female ones.2. The widespread orienteering course in general colleges and universities is still in the primary stage. The course in some colleges has been established, however, for lack of maps and security and other reasons, campus is still the teaching ground field. So the students do not really enter into the nature as well as the outdoors. During the teaching process, some other problems need to be resolved, such as no uniform teaching materials, too simple teaching contents, unreasonable teaching allocation, poor teaching evaluation and theory systems, and a serious lack of teaching ground fields and equipments.3. Teachers qualified to teach orienteering and train the students in general colleges and universities are supposed to be improved. Research shows that as a powerful base of orienteering developing in Hubei province, the average age of orienteering coaches is low, and unbalanced in gender. Furthermore, most coaches have a low qualification and lead a team for a very short time, so they lack teaching experiences.4. Those main factors that influence and restrict the orienteering development in Hubei province are the leader's less attention, no supporting policies and a lack of enough money. And the lacks of specific maps and professional map designers are also anther vital element.5. How to integrate the orienteering resources, strengthen teachers'qualification, broaden the players'training access and deepen the teaching research are the essential measures to develop this sport in Hubei's general colleges and universities..Comparatively speaking, the whole level of orienteering development in Hubei province is lower than that in other areas in China. Through the research on the current situation of orienteering in Hubei province, the paper gives some references to improve the teaching and build up a solid foundation of its further popularity and development.
