Faced with the information times of the 21st century, English teaching in vocational schools has to face the problem of how to follow the steps of the nationwide teaching reform and how to change the test-oriented teaching into the quality-oriented teaching. Since 1980's we have made great effort to modify the classroom-teaching model to promote the quality-oriented teaching and students' developments and have gained a lot of achievements, one of which is the Grading and Progressive teaching pattern. But English teaching reform in vocational schools falls behind relatively, students still learn English Passively. Besides, bad student sources, bad learning habits, low English proficiency and great differences lead to a bad chain reaction: Students dislike learning English, English teachers dislike teaching English and collective cheating has come into being, etc. Through the analysis of the Grading and Progressive teaching pattern, the research of the characteristics of vocational school students and the demerits of English teaching in vocational schools and the experiment in Business English Class of the First Vocational School in Anshan, this thesis puts forward that with such great difference of English levels and learning abilities English teaching in vocational schools should adopt the Grading and Progressive teaching pattern, and the pattern should have the characteristics of vocational schools too. It views students as the main body, enables students to develop their quality as well as their creative and productive ability wholly. It can solve the contradiction between the uniform teaching requirements and the difference of students' individuality. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One relates the significance of carrying out the Grading and Progressive English Teaching in vocational schools. Chapter Two analyses the present situation and demerits of English teaching in vocational schools. Chapter Three defines the conception, the gist, the premise and the merits of the Grading and Progressive English Teaching Pattern. Chapter Four puts forward the SGG English teaching pattern, relates the operation tactics of the SGG teaching pattern and proves the idea with the experiment of Business English Class of the First Vocational School in Anshan. Chapter five states the four principles to be obeyed. Lastly the thesis draws a conclusion. The SGG English teaching pattern is a helpful reform of the traditional teaching pattern. It can help teachers with their teaching efficiency greatly and arouse students' interest and confidence in learning English. It can better help teachers to carry out the quality-oriented education.
