Xue Xuan was the master of rationalistic philosophy in Ming dynasty and the founder of school of eastern river. Xue Xuan devoted all his life into educational career. The school of eastern river is the product of his educational theory and practice. In his 20 years'teaching career, he developed the theory of'dual nature'whose center is"Teaching is based on principle, and on which nature is based on". Pragmatism is the feature of his rationalistic educational system. In this way, he fostered many scholars. His followers were widespread and eventually formed the school of eastern river. For a long time, the academy deemed Xue Xuan as a protestor of Xizong Huang's thoughts and neglected his unique contribution in the history of rationalistic development .Therefore, the research on Xue Xuan's rationalistic philosophy and his educational theory is of great significance.The present paper includes four parts and makes analysis and research on his educational thoughts. The first part is on Xue Xuan's biography based on the political and culture background in early Ming dynasty; The second part analyzes the formation of Xue Xuan's educational theory by the influence of traditional educational thoughts; The third part ,makes a research on Xue Xuan's teaching methodology by analyzing his educational goals and principles. To a certain extent, his unique educational thoughts and the significance of research on them are positively evaluated; The fourth part is research on the deep influence of Xue Xuan's educational theory on the later movement of pragmatism by the historical status of his followers. Xue Xuan is a social political educator, whose thoughts were in service of feudal dynasty. However, there are many of his thoughts that are worth learning .It is the original aim of the present paper to discard the dross and select the essence historically.
