Adaption and development are the basic contents of individual's life as well projects confronted with by adolescents. Ego identity can influence all the aspects of adolescent development. And the formation of self identity is the indicator of personality perfect and the best psychological function. Social adaptive behavior is the expectation of technical ability which deals with daily life and undertakes society duty, the main indicator of social maturation.By the cross-sectional design, the present study was to investigate the development characteristic of adolescent ego identity, developing characteristics of adolescents' social adaptive behavior and the relationship between ego identity status and social adaptive behavior. A sample of 480 Chinese adolescents and 115 juvie aged 13-18 was investigated with series of Chinese transitions of measures, including the revised Ego Identity Status Questionnaire(EOMEIS-2) and Adolescent's Social Adaptive Behaviors Questionnaire. Results indicated:1. For the adolescents, the distributions of ego identity statuses, whether in the ideological, interpersonal or total domain, are unbalanced. 60% of adolescents are in the identity moratorium status, and identity diliusion, foreclosure and achievement in turn.2. As regards the developmental trends of identity statuses, in the ideological domain, the numberof identity achievements, diffusions and foreclosures has no significant change, i.e., the development of these statuses is stable; the proportion of moratorium is increasing during the adolescent. In the interpersonal domain, the proportion of foreclosures change at different age and other status is stable.3. Significant age and gender differences in normal social adaptive behaviors are found; Significant age and grade differences are found in poor adaptive behaviors. With the increase of the age, poor adaptive behaviors tend to go up.4. There is no significant differenc between normal students and juvie in different identity status and the juvie has the same development trends as the normal students.5. In normal social adaptive behaviors, the students in different ideological identity status has different performance level, and the differences also exit in different factors of normal adaptive behaviors. And the youth in diffusion status has the highest level. There is no difference between different interpersonal identity statuses. 6. In poor adaptive behaviors, the students in different identity status has different performance level, and the differences also exit in different factors of poor adaptive behaviors. And the youth in diffusion status has the lowest level. There is no difference between different interpersonal identity statuses.
