Religion has greatly influenced people in all ages and as one of three religions in the world, Christianity isn't an exception. Due to the violent exclusion and the strong willing that turns idealism into realism, Christianity was always combined with the neoteric colonialism after it was introduced to China. With the protection of unequal treaties, those missionaries of Christianity swarmed into China to propagandize Christianity after Opium War. They took schools as breakthrough after encountering all kinds of resistance and mission schools came into being in this condition. The neoteric mission schools in Anhui had complete systems, advanced techniques and strict management. They attached importance to the English teaching and physical training and became the important part of neoteric education system of Anhui. The thesis mainly focuses on the origin, development and evaluation of neoteric mission schools in Anhui. It could be divided into three parts:The first part discusses the origin of church education in Anhui and introduces the development of Christianity in Anhui by the end of Qing dynasty. As the two branches of Christianity, Catholicism and Protestantism took on different characteristics in their development because they were introduced into Anhui at different time, and meanwhile differed in propagandized strategies and manners. In the course of spreading gospel by missionaries, the conflict and contradiction between mission schools and people were produced, which led to the anti-church movement all over Anhui and had an effect on the development of church. In the hard time, the mission schools made a breakthrough to people's anti-church mentality by starting mission schools and in Anhui, middle schools and elementary schools came forth like bamboo shoots after a spring rain. The second part introduces the development of church education in Anhui and it includes five stages. The first stage is that church education made primary development before 1911. The second stage is that church education made fast development based on the development by the end of Qing dynasty and showed many new features from 1911 to 1923. The third stage is that church education made devious development from 1924 to 1937. At that time, the mission schools were dealt an unprecedented blow and they came through Heathenish Movement, Five-thirty Movement and Northern-expedition Movement. In adversity, the mission schools constantly sought to change and registered to government to acquire legal status. Accordingly, the teaching in the mission schools also gradually tended towards the right paths. The fourth stage is church education made hard development from 1937 to 1945. Due to Japanese troop's large-scale aggression, many missionaries were persecuted and a great number of mission schools were forced to close down. Some schools that could continue teaching moved to other provinces and some schools moved to the mountain areas of Anhui. Although there were not adequate schools like this, they had made a good preparation for recovering teaching after Anti-Japanese War. The fifth stage is from 1945 to 1949. After the Anti-Japanese War for eight years, China came through Liberation War for three years. The queasy political situation made the mission schools decline gradually, and while Anhui won liberation, the mission schools were taken-over by government. From then on, the mission schools retreated from the historical stage. Seeing from the development of mission schools, we'll find that each stage has respective characteristics, which are influenced by national situation, people's mentality and missionaries' strategies of spreading, and represent diversity and complexity. The third part is the evaluation for the church education in Anhui. On one hand, the part indicates the active role of church education for enhancing people's quality, bringing up person with ability, promoting inter-cultural communication and enlightening people. On the other hand, the part also indicates the nature of church education such as destroying China's sovereignty of education and lulling people by use of religion education. Therefore, the evaluation of church education should be dialectically considered. To sum up, the government advocates that education should be put into the essential Place at present and the thesis is expected to provide available references for modern education in some aspects through the deep research and discussion on the church education of Anhui.
